Harman International is proud to present the eighth year of harman: how to listen®, a music education outreach program.

The program, a joint creation of Dr. Sidney Harman, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Harman International Industries, Incorporated, and renowned trumpet player Wynton Marsalis, began in the spring of 1996, based upon the shared belief that "listening is important in music and important in life." The curriculum, which brings professional musicians into the classroom, grew out of the belief that music, in Mr. Marsalis' words, "teaches kids self-discipline, concentration and cooperation."

During the past seven years, Harman International has brought harman: how to listen to a total of 300 schools in 25 cities. harman: how to listen celebrated its seventh anniversary with artists representing the worlds of jazz, blues, hip-hop and rock music.

In 2005, noted hip-hop star Talib Kweli conducted the harman: how to listen "day of listening" format in New York, Detroit, Phoenix, Miami and Baltimore. Often referred to as a genius with the mic, Talib Kweli views his music as literature in the most traditional sense: as a completely engaging way of communicating ideas. Dr. Harman says, "As we begin our eighth season of harman: how to listen, we welcome Talib Kweli onboard as our national master teacher. A tremendous talent in the hip-hop community, his art honestly reflects the many challenges facing today's youth. We believe that Talib Kweli will be an exceptionally effective and inspiring teacher."
